Meeting with Pablo on 24 April 2025[edit]

Summary of meeting with Pablo from the Time Bank, Tessa Ten Tusscher and Monica Smith, April 23, 2025 at the Santa Eugenia civic center:

About the Time Bank: Pablo is one of the founding members and has participated for the last 15 years helping to run the organization. There are about 700 registered members, though less than half are very active. An initial interview is required for an individual to join/participate in Time Bank exchanges. There are a number of regular activities, such as language sessions (English and French), cooking classes, and one-off events like a photography class.

In principle, the Time Bank works on an exchange system, with work done by one person earning time credits, and work received by another person creating a time charge. If there is a group event, the person giving the class might get a few hours of credits, while the members attending might be charged a percentage of the total (perhaps 15 minutes). Exchanges do not need to be one-to-one; a person could get credits from one activity and use them with another activity.

Pablo has joined a few groups within Girona Buddies, such as the volunteer group, so he can learn more about how GB functions and the kinds of people who participate.

Pablo proposed that the two groups could get to know each other better by allowing GB members to participate in Time Bank activities with a time charge for GB, and the other way around – Time Bank members could participate in GB activities with a time charge to the Time Bank. For instance, if someone from the Time Bank wanted to attend the GB group hike, the Time Bank itself could get a charge of 15 minutes per person, or something like that. This could benefit GB in that it would not require GB members to each have a screening interview.

We did not make a counter proposal to this suggestion, as it was an initial meeting. However, this accounting of time on an entity basis raises the question – are GB activities open to everyone without any pre-conditions? If yes, it would be awkward to “charge” someone from the Time Bank for something that is offered freely to others.

Other questions – is the idea for the GB to integrate with the Time Bank, or to inform GB members about the Time Bank as an option? Those would require different strategies.

Pablo said that if members of GB are interested in joining the Time Bank, they could come for an interview/screening and join, but the language barrier might be an issue. Many events are in Catalan or Spanish.
